In a recent interview with Cigar Aficionado for their September/October issue, Mark Wahlberg, the renowned actor, producer, and entrepreneur, reflected on his career and the possibility of stepping away from acting. At 52 years old, Wahlberg discussed his growing workload and how it might impact his future in front of the camera.
Wahlberg acknowledged that he’s currently working harder than ever, and he’s contemplating when he can pass on certain business ventures or exit them. With four children alongside his wife Rhea Durham, he’s considering a shift in his acting pace, recognizing the challenges it presents.
Over the past few years, Wahlberg has been involved in a string of films, including Me Time, Father Stu, Uncharted, Infinite, Joe Bell, and Spencer Confidential. He also has several upcoming projects like Arthur the King, The Union, The Family Plan, Flight Risk, and The Six Billion Dollar Man. During the interview, Wahlberg emphasized the importance of family, faith, and his role as a producer in diversifying his Hollywood career.
He discussed his transition into producing, driven by the necessity to create opportunities for himself rather than waiting for established actors like Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, or Leonardo DiCaprio to pass on movie roles. Wahlberg wanted to take control of his destiny by seeking out material suitable for him and producing it.
Looking ahead, Wahlberg hinted at the possibility of trying his hand at directing and collaborating with emerging talents in the industry. In the meantime, he remains focused on expanding his business empire, which includes his tequila brand, Flecha Azul.
Interestingly, Wahlberg also reflected on his initial reluctance to take on the role of Dirk Diggler, a porn performer, in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 film Boogie Nights. At the time, he was concerned that the subject matter might exploit him similarly to his earlier Marky Mark days when he famously posed in Calvin Klein underwear. However, after reading the script and realizing the potential for greatness, he eventually embraced the role that would become a pivotal moment in his career. Source
