Anthony Chen, known for The Breaking Ice, is set to direct Sunset Park, penned by Shinho Lee. This project is under Barunson C&C, a subsidiary of Barunson E&A, which produced the award-winning Parasite.
Sunset Park narrates an unexpected U.S. journey of a Korean father and his son’s roommate following distressing news about his son. Jane Hyojin Kwon and Woo-sik Seo are developing the project, with Giraffe Pictures partnering for production. Lee, based in New York, has credits including The Chaser and While The Women Are Sleeping.
This film is one of several global initiatives by Barunson, announced around the Busan International Film Festival. Another notable project is Princess Bari, a film adaptation of Hwang Sok-yong’s celebrated novel directed by Gina Kim. The storyline, centered on a shaman princess’s adventures from Asia to Europe, focuses on her life in London.
The company also plans to launch Strong Girl Nam-soon, a spin-off series of Strong Girl Bong-soon, featuring actors like Lee Yoo-mi, Kim Jung-eun, and others. It will be available on JTBC in Korea and Netflix globally.
Led by veteran producer Seo Woo-sik, Barunson C&C aims to tell Korean stories with a global appeal, as emphasized by Seo in a conversation with Variety. They are working on various projects, including Turning Pages, a dramedy set in Seoul, and an Indonesian adaptation of the popular series Descendants of the Sun.
With over a dozen Korean TV projects in the pipeline, the company collaborates with prominent industry professionals, including Moon Ji-won, Kim Soo-Jung, and Park Se-young, on various upcoming ventures.
